Orleans, Eastham at Odds Over Nauset Spit Off-Road Vehicles

Beach TracksORLEANS – Off-road vehicles on Nauset spit are becoming an issue between Orleans and Eastham.

Eastham’s Conservation Commission has floated the possibility of imposing fines on Orleans as a result of ORV traffic on the Eastham section of the beach.

Eastham does not allow ORVs on the beach, while Orleans does.

Orleans selectman David Dunford said the town won’t change how it manages its portion of the beach.

“Our intention is to move forward to continue to manage the property as we have for the last 25 years under our own existing order of conditions here in Orleans.”

Dunford stressed, however, that while ORV use is fine in Orleans, he respects Eastham’s wishes to not have ORV traffic on their beach.

“Over-sand vehicles traveling into Eastham on that beach is inappropriate and should not happen,” Dunford said.

Orleans officials will be at a meeting of the Eastham Conservation Commission on Tuesday to try and work on the issue.
