CHATHAM – New England Patriots wide receiver Malcolm Mitchell visited the Chatham Elementary School Friday to talk about the importance of literacy with students.

Mitchell read his children’s book “The Magician’s Hat,” a story about the “magic” of reading. Mitchell wrote the book after struggling with reading throughout his life, an issue that persisted into his college years.

Mitchell, who earned Tom Brady’s trust in his rookie year and caught 6 passes for 70 yards in the second half of Super Bowl LI, describes learning to read as his “proudest accomplishment.”

‘I’m here today because reading is important to me and I want to share it with you,” said Mitchell to students at the event. “Reading is a magical experience, it can be fun and I want it to be for you.”

The second year wide receiver has stated that football came naturally to him, but that he “had to work to read.”

“To play in the NFL, to play for the Patriots, and to win the Super Bowl, I had to read,” said Mitchell.

He has been speaking with schoolchildren across the region about his story and the importance of reading. Mitchell is the founder of “Read With Malcolm,” a non-profit that promotes childhood literacy.

A star wide receiver at the University of Georgia, Mitchell has talked in the past about how joining a book club with a group of local women helped shape him during his college years.

“I learned through my own experience, no matter what I wanted to do, reading would get me there,” said Mitchell.

Mitchell caught 32 passes for 401 yards and 4 touchdowns in his rookie season.
