Permit Lapses for Truro Campground

TRURO – The business permit for a Truro Campground on South Highland Road has lapsed after officials with the Cape Cod National Seashore say they are upset with the business.

Seashore Superintendent George Price said in a letter written last month that the Seashore is outraged by the disregard for town zoning by Horton’s Campground.

The Seashore is hoping that the business can fix the issues and satisfy the necessary regulatory requirements.

In May, the campground was clearing, grading and conducting utility work in order to install sewer pipes to campsites, which is mandated by the state, but the town issued a stop-work order, citing the work as a significant violation.

“There was no indication of the type of construction that was going to happen at the site, they basically clear-cut the site, scraped the top soil, they put in facilities for RVs, throughout the campsite and it really is upsetting and very distressing that this was the action that they took,” said Price.

The Seashore Advisory Commission recommended in December that the campground’s certificate of suspension of condemnation (CSC) be allowed to lapse on December 31.

The loss of the permit could affect the company’s chances of getting mortgages on the property, loans or insurance, but the campground can still operate under the town’s licenses.

Representatives from the campground will appear for a site plan review public hearing before the Truro Planning Board on January 17.

An appeal of the town’s stop-work order will be discussed at the town’s Zoning Board of Appeals public hearing on January 23.

“They have the option, if they’re able to comply with town regulations as well as satisfy the requirements of the Advisory Commission and the Seashore staff, they could potentially have that CSC reinstated, but at this point, it has expired,” said Price.
