PETA Offers Reward for Information on Loon Shootings

EASTHAM – PETA is offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the people responsible for fatally shooting two common loons on Cape Cod last month.

The birds, which are protected under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act, were found with shotgun pellet wounds in their bodies in Eastham and Truro.

“At least two birds have been shot and left to die from grievously painful injuries,” said PETA Senior Director Colleen O’Brien. “PETA is urging anyone with information about either case to come forward immediately.”

Police continue to investigate the incidents and no arrests have been made.

The loons are listed as a species of “special concern” in Massachusetts.
