HYANNIS – Eversource is warning its customers about a phone scam that’s targeting residents throughout Cape Cod.
Two Yarmouth residents recently fell victim to the utility scam, one in the amount of $2,400 and another for $600.
Police say that the scam artists sound convincing and official and will call and tell residents that their account is delinquent and will request a payment immediately.
“Scammers are relentless and often sound legitimate and convincing but they’re only successful if they catch customers off guard and coerce them into making a payment,” said Eversource spokesman Mike Durand.
Those affected by the scam have reported to police that the individuals use threats of imminent service interruption if not paid immediately.
The utility company is advising customers to hang up immediately and contact authorities and them.
“The key to stopping these predators in their tracks is don’t panic and don’t pay,” said Durand.
Eversource said that they and other utility companies never call and demand payment by gift card for money/credit cards.
