Pilgrim Could Pay Millions More Under New Bill Filed by Cape Legislator

power plantPLYMOUTH – The Pilgrim Nuclear Power Plant could pay millions more each year if a proposal on Beacon Hill becomes law.

Cape and Islands State Senator Dan Wolf (D-Harwich) has filed a bill that would charge Pilgrim $10,000 annually for every spent fuel rod being stored at the Plymouth facility, coming out to $33 million a year.

“It’s not punitive in any way. It’s just to assess what we think is the real cost of having that power plant in our backyard,” Wolf said. “It hugely incentivizes the plant to store [the fuel rods] in a much safer dry cask environment. They can get out of the $33 million dollars a year if and as they move the spent fuel rods into a dry cask storage.”

The money would be given to various towns in the area of Pilgrim, with Plymouth receiving the most money. Every town on the Cape would get money under the proposal.

Another bill filed by Wolf would hold $25 million from Pilgrim annually in escrow should the plant ever be decommissioned.
