Pilgrim Power Station Taken Off Line Before Storm

nuclearPLYMOUTH – Just weeks after winter storm Juno caused the Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station in Plymouth to shut down for 12 days, the station has been taken off=line today, in preparation for winter storm Neptune.

Lauren Burm, spokeswoman for Entergy, which owns the plant, said, “We made this decision because we are following our plant procedures that direct this action based on weather conditions and predictions.”

Burm said that they cannot reveal how long they will be offline but adds that the are addressing a number of concerns.

Pilgrim officials released the following statement: “In preparation for Storm Neptune, Pilgrim Station made the decision to take the plant off line. We are following plant procedures to prepare for a potential loss of offsite power or the grid’s inability to accept the power Pilgrim generates. As always, safety is our number one priority and there is no threat to the safety of plant workers or the general public.”

Burm said that the station will have extra staff on hand because of the storm. “Everyone is still here. It’s just that the plant is not generating electricity,” she said.

She added, “There’s no environmental danger. There’s no danger to the public or our plant workers and safety is always at the forefront of everything we do.”
