Police Raid Meth Lab in Falmouth

police carFALMOUTH – Falmouth Police working with the federal Drug Enforcement Agency discovered equipment used to manufacture methamphetamines at a rental house in East Falmouth.

Falmouth Police Chief Edward Dunne said he believes it is the first meth lab found on Cape Cod. The owners of the house live in Connecticut and told police they were unaware of the activities at the house, according to Dunne.

According to police, the investigation began a couple of months ago when the Barnstable Police Narcotics unit noticed an uptick in methamphetamines in the Main Street area of Hyannis.

An initial investigation found that the drug was coming from Falmouth.

The Barnstable and Falmouth police departments made a series of controlled buys and determined that the drugs were being produced in a home at 87 Chestnut Street in East Falmouth.

Thursday morning, the Falmouth Police Department, Barnstable Narcotics Unit and the DEA Clandestine Lab Enforcement Team executed a search warrant at the house and discovered an active meth lab.

Based on evidence recovered during the execution of the warrant and during the course of the investigation, Edward Rooney, 33, who lives at the address, was arrested and charged with possession with intent to distribute a class B substance and carrying a dangerous weapon, a spring-assisted knife.

Sean Mahavik, 25, who police say is homeless, was charged with possession with intent to distribute a class B drug.

Police arrested the two men after pulling them over on Maravista Avenue. There was a 10-year-old child living in the residence where the meth lab was located and police have contacted the Department of Children and Families about the child, according to police.

Police said Rooney was driving the car when it was stopped by police and he was intoxicated at the time.

The street was cordoned off and the scene was still being processed  on Thursday afternoon.

Chief Dunne said Rooney’s mother was also living at the house.

The investigation remains open and there may be further charges pending, according to police.
