FALMOUTH – The Mashpee Wampanoag Pow Wow celebration last weekend at the Barnstable County Fairgrounds crowned the 2014-2015 Pow Wow Princess.

Sassamin Weeden, 20, received the award Sunday.

Weeden, the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe Youth Council Chairwoman, is the granddaughter of Patricia Turner Weeden, the first Pow Wow Princess.

The 20-year-old was chosen over 3 other women to win the crown.

To be considered for Pow Wow Princess, candidates must be between the ages of 16 and 21, single, active within the community, and have a strong knowledge of their tribe’s culture and history.

Candidates must also have participated in other Pow Wows, primarily through dance.

Weeden was re-elected as the United National Indian Tribal Youth Executive Committee Northeast Region Representative last week in Portland, Ore. during the National UNITY Conference.

As part of the committee, Sassamin will work with 13 regional representatives to address Native youth issues over the course of the next year.

Sassamin succeeds Dee Dee Jackson, the 2013 Pow Wow Princess.
