PLYMOUTH – Anti-Nuclear activists will rally today at the gates of the Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station in Plymouth as federal officials wrap up the first two weeks of an inspection of the troubled reactor.
The Cape Downwinders are calling for the plant to be shut down immediately, citing an internal Nuclear Regulatory Commission e-mail made public this week describing the station as “overwhelmed” and highlighting problems with Pilgrim’s safety culture.
“The NRC preliminary e-mail affirms what we have known all along; Pilgrim is a recipe for catastrophe and must be closed now,” said Diane Turco, the President of the Cape Downwinders.
Pilgrim is under increased federal oversight by the NRC after a series of unplanned shutdowns and safety violations. The station is one of the three worst performing reactors in the country, according to the NRC.
The rally takes place from 1 to 3 p.m.
