Provincetown Selectmen Weigh Seashore Shorebird Proposal

450910609PROVINCETOWN – Provincetown selectmen will soon vote on the Cape Cod National Seashore’s proposed shorebird management plan, which could call for the culling of coyotes and crows in an attempt to protect the endangered birds.

Birds and nests are falling victim to the predators, and Seashore officials believe action needs to be taken to protect the animals.

The Seashore is gauging the opinion of town on the Outer Cape, including Provincetown. Tom Donegan, the chairman of the Board of Selectmen, indicated that the board has some reservations about lethal methods of predatory control.

“We have to figure out how we can support the Seashore and making sure the species don’t become extinct, but doing the right thing relative culling of animals. It’s a very difficult choice,” Donegan said.

Ultimately Provincetown does not have the official say on the proposal, but Donegan said they appreciate the Seashore’s willingness to take into account the opinion of Outer Cape towns.

“I think we’re advisory,” Donegan said. “The Seashore has the ability to do whatever it chooses, and I really do applaud the Seashore and [Superintendent George Price] in particular for coming out to the towns and listening to us.”

The board is expected to address the matter at their next meeting in January. The town will send a letter to the Seashore on its stance.
