Public Safety Officials Discuss Safety Tips With Local Seniors

SOUTH YARMOUTH – A number of local public safety officials met with senior citizens in Yarmouth Tuesday to talk about ways to stay safe, particularly when it comes to financial threats.

One of the major topics at the forum at Thirwood Place was scam artists and how they often target the elderly. Barnstable County Sheriff Jim Cummings, one of the law enforcement officials in attendance, addressed the tactics criminals use to scam citizens out of their money.

“When you have to give money to get money, that’s a scam,” Cummings said.

“If you just won $50,000 but they say you have to give $1,000 up front to pay the taxes, no, just take it out of the 50 I won!,” the Sheriff quipped.

Cummings was joined by Deputy Chief Steven Xiarhos from the Yarmouth Police Department and Captain Jamie Armstrong of the Yarmouth Fire Department, who talked about staying safe during the winter months.
