ONSET – Doug the Quahog, Cape Cod’s own summer weather prognosticating bivalve makes his announcement on the first day of summer each year. This year, the much-anticipated prediction came Saturday at noon after the clam arrived with a full security detail at Onset Harbor at the mouth of the Cape Cod Canal.

The prediction from the Cape’s version of Punxsutawney Phil, was for 93.6 sunny days this summer.

Saturday’s festivities were almost marred by pirates but the quahog’s armed security detail was able to fend them off so he could make his weather predictions. The quahog’s interpreter, Johnny Quahog, who speaks quahog-ese, was involved in the melee.

Wendy Northcross, CEO of the Cape Cod Chamber, said Doug has gotten the forecast right five years in a row, missing only on his first attempt in 2009. That first year, the bad forecast almost landed Doug into the pot to be made into chowder, but he turned his prediction around the next weekend.
