WELLFLEET – Applications for relief funding are now available for shellfishermen affected by the shutdown of Wellfleet Harbor beds this fall.
The non-profit Wellfleet Shellfish Promotion and Tasting will distribute $15,000 to those in need following the month-long closure in October and November. All funding will be available before Christmas.
The public donated over $5,000 at this year’s Wellfleet OysterFest to support the fishermen who had lost income. SPAT then supplemented the Shellfishermen Relief Fund with a $10,000 donation.
“It’s really been quite a challenge for everyone,” said Michelle Insley, the Executive Director of Wellfleet SPAT.
All beds were closed down on October 13 when a norovirus outbreak was detected. Federal requirements mandate a minimum 21-day closure if a Norovirus outbreak is detected. The beds were reopened to shellfishing on November 14.
