QUINCY – One of Cape Cod’s state representatives helped raise money for cancer research by shaving his head this week.
Brewster State Rep. Tim Whelan took part in the “Saving by Shaving” event at Granite Telecommunications in Quincy, where his oldest daughter is employed. By getting his head shaved, a $50,000 donation was made to the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute to support Pancreatic Cancer research efforts.
Whelan was joined in the barber’s chair by Gov. Charlie Baker, other state officials, Red Sox president Sam Kennedy, and 900 company employees at the event.
In total, over $5 million was raised.
“Like so many, cancer has taken so many loved ones and good friends from me long before their time,” Whelan said. “It was a great honor to be invited to participate. I let my hair grow up for a full three weeks to get ready for today and am already looking forward to next year.”
