BOSTON (AP) — As Gov. Charlie Baker prepares to outline his priorities for 2017, the Republican is working to keep his political footing on what could be a rocky path ahead.
While there’s plenty to celebrate in Massachusetts, including a 2.8 percent unemployment rate, there are also challenges for Baker as he puts the finishing touches on his State of the Commonwealth address.
Baker will deliver the address to lawmakers and a statewide TV audience Tuesday.
One big question facing the state is the future of former President Barack Obama’s health care law. Another challenge is the state budget.
Last month, Baker cut nearly $100 million to close a nagging shortfall in the state’s nearly $40 billion budget.
Still another challenge is implementing the state’s new voter-approved marijuana legalization law, which Baker opposed.
