Riptides Expected From Bertha

riptidesBARNSTABLE – With Tropical Storm Bertha expected to pass within a few hundred miles of the coast of Massachusetts over the next couple of days, state emergency management officials are reminding beach goers that riptides and high surf is possible.

Peter Judge, spokesman for Massachusetts Emergency Management, “In the next couple of days, the storm is going to pass probably 300 miles or so away from us, it’s really going to churn up the ocean. We just want people to use a little extra caution.”

Judge said if you’re caught in a riptide, ride it out and then make your way to shore, if you see someone caught, notify safety officials.

“Don’t panic. Paddle your way to the coast. Usually they are only a couple hundred miles wide,” he said of riptides.
