Robert O’Brien Retires from Barnstable Airport Commission

HYANNIS – Longtime Barnstable Airport Commissioner Bob O’Brien has announced his retirement from the Barnstable Airport Commission after having served on the board for more than 13 years.

“I have led a very full and active life, and I now think it is time to scale back. I plan to spend time with my family as well as enjoy all that Cape Cod has to offer – both in season and off,” says Bob O’Brien. “I am deeply grateful to the Commission for honoring me with a position where I hope to have made a positive impact.”

“Bob O’Brien has been a lynch pin in the Town, a mentor to many, a guiding light for the airport, and a friend,” says Bud Breault, Barnstable Airport Manager. “His regular presence will be sorely missed.”

Up until recently, O’Brien had remained active on several community boards and groups including the Steamship Authority.

He was first appointed to the Board as the first representative for the port community of Barnstable and remained on the board for 25 years.

Prior to his life on Cape Cod, O’Brien had a long and distinguished career with the U.S. Coast Guard.

During World War II, O’Brien was with assigned to the Coast Guard Cutter Duane, the Amphibious Command Ship, stationed in Italy, assigned to the European Theater patrolling the Atlantic and Mediterranean, and participated in the invasion of Southern France.

Upon his retirement from the U. S. Coast Guard in 1983, he settled in Barnstable and began his second career with the Town of Barnstable, serving as Director of the Public Works Department, and he continues to serve as the Budget Director, and has filled in as the Acting Assistant Town Manager.

Eligible candidates are currently being considered for his seat on the Barnstable Airport Commission by the Town of Barnstable.
