Roundabout Considered At Dangerous Harwich Intersection

roundaboutHARWICH – Harwich officials are considering converting the intersection of Route 39 and Pleasant Bay Road into a roundabout.

Town officials have been encouraged by the implementation of a roundabout at Route 39 and Queen Anne Road, and are thinking a similar plan at Pleasant Bay Road could solve the safety problems that have plagued the junction.

“This is one of Harwich’s worst intersections,” said DPW Director Lincoln Hooper, “it’s ranked in the top 50 worst crash sites, according to the Cape Cod Commission report.”

Hooper said sight lines are the primary culprit for the intersection’s safety problems. He added that should the town eventually decide to implement a roundabout at the intersection, it would be considered a “mini-roundabout,” with the outside diameter being 90 feet or less.
