EASTHAM – The Cape Cod National Seashore has announced that a major rehabilitation project at Eastham’s Salt Pond Amphitheater has been completed and the facility is now ready to host a lineup of public summer programming.

Originally constructed in the 1960’s, the outdoor amphitheater has undergone numerous repairs and minor renovations over the years. This project represented the first significant rehabilitation in its 50 year history.

“We’re really excited that we were able to accomplish a major facelift of this amphitheater,” said Sue Moynihan, Chief of Interpretation and Cultural Resources Management at the Cape Cod National Seashore.

“We spent most of 2017, and the end of 2016, repairing the amphitheater, it is now done and we’re excited to be able to use this revitalized space for a variety of programs this summer.”

The effort, made possible through federal grant funding, brought the facility up to code as the signature project of the 2016 National Park Service Centennial.

With the goal of making the Salt Pond Amphitheater safe, accessible, and functional for a wide variety of programming, crews repaired the structure and stage, installed new pathways and benches, renovated malfunctioning water fountains, and poured new asphalt.

The project also included the addition of a sophisticated new audio-visual system, which was funded through beach fees collected at the Seashore.

The revitalized amphitheater will now play host family events, films, illustrated ranger talks, concerts, and other performances and functions.

“We’re very excited about a new program we’re trying this year specifically for families, it’s called Friday Night Fun, and they’re at 7:30.” explained Moynihan,

“We are going to have a lot of different interactive topics that we’ll explore, pirates, horseshoe crabs, astronomy, sea creatures, and then on several of the nights we’re going to show some box office family movies like Finding Nemo, Finding Dory, and Moana, and we’re welcoming people to come in their PJ’s if they would like.”

The Salt Pond Amphitheater’s signature presentation this year will be the return of the Cape Cod Symphony for a free outdoor concert.
