Sandwich Fire Department Battles Brush Fire

fireSANDWICH – The Sandwich Fire Department fought a brush fire in the area of Peters Pond Park Saturday evening.

The department received a call at 5:47 p.m. reporting a possible fire in the area.

Firefighters arrived and initially had trouble locating the fire, according to Cap. Scott Ames.

the Firefighters then located the fire in conservation land adjacent to Peters Pond Park.

Ames said crews knocked down the fire and overhauled the area in about an hour.

The fire burned about a quarter to a half acre of brush.

There were no injuries reported, but 3 members of the Sandwich Fire Department were stung by bees.

Ames said that crew members must have disturbed a nest along the path they were using to get the fire and a nearby resident supplied the firefighters with wasp killer spray.

Officials could not determine a cause of the fire.

Crews from West Barnstable assisted by covering the Sandwich station.
