Sandwich Selectmen Approve Utility Tree Cutting

trees on capeSANDWICH – National Grid has received the go-ahead to cut thousands of trees.

About 100 Sandwich residents turned out in force last night to a meeting of the Sandwich Board of Selectmen to express their opposition to the tree cutting.

National Grid plans to remove the trees in order to install a larger gas line to carry gas to mid, lower and outer Cape towns.

Sandwich Selectmen voted unanimously last night to allow the cutting.

Residents say the trees serve as a critical buffer to block the sights and sounds of Route 6.

But Sandwich Selectman Jim Pierce says science does not back that up. He referred to studies that state that the trees may be a sight buffer but there is no evidence that they are a sound buffer.

National Grid says it will replace the trees it removes with a major replanting project. But residents say the planting of seedlings will not replace the current canopy for many years.
