Sandwich STEM Academy Director Not Being Replaced

SANDWICH – There are no plans to replace Sandwich STEM Academy Director Gilbert Newton after he retires in June.

That’s according to Sandwich Schools Superintendent Pamela Gould who announced the decision last month during a school committee meeting.

Instead, Sandwich High School Principal Ellin Booras will be made the principal for both schools.

Owen Hill will be the assistant principal at STEM while Joshua Tarsky and Anne Wagner will serve as assistant principal at the high school.

The moves were made in response to $814,000 in cuts that had to be made to stay within the budget for the coming year, and the decision to not replace Newton was difficult, said Gould.

“I don’t take this lightly but I can assure people that we are not going to dismantle STEM, I’ve seen it all out on Facebook, it’s not going to happen, we’re going to take everything we are,” said Gould.

The proposed school budget is an increase of more than $43,000 over the current year’s budget at a 2.99 percent increase, which is more than the 2.5 percent allotted for the district.

“As we go through this, I know we’ll get to the 2.5 percent, but I want to make sure we’re doing it the right way and that we’ve been able to communicate with people,” said Gould.

Gould added that a loss of $166,000 to salaries at the high school could be explained by transitioning some staff to different positions at STEM.
