Santas Bring Holiday Cheer to Cape Cod – in April

SOUTH YARMOUTH – Passersby on Route 28 yesterday may have thought the North Pole was relocated.

Over 60 Santas, part of the group North East Santas, spread holiday cheer and raised money for St. Jude Children’s Hospital with a bowling event at Ryan Family Amusements.

The 14th annual North East Santas Gathering on Cape Cod also made a pit stop the Cape Cod Irish Village to dine with local families.

One such Santa (alius: George, of Rhode Island) said it was also a growth experience for those who don the old red and white suit each year.

A set of workshops, held earlier in the day, showed the jolly men how to take care of their beards. George said one Santa present at the festivities is an expert in beard and hair care.

Another workshop coached the Santas in holiday-themed sign language in order to enhance the experience for deaf children.

The return of an old favorite among many of the more experienced St. Nicks also highlighted the workshop schedule: “how to make a moment last a lifetime.”

George said that one holds special significance in this line of work.

“We’re all in this to make people happy, make children happy, make adults happy,” he said. “It’s what we do: we’re kind of selfish, because we’re making ourselves feel good by making other people feel good.”

George is one of many Northeastern Santas to make over 100 visits, commercial and private, every year during the months of November and December.

The Santa gathering on Cape Cod takes all year to plan, he said.

The Cape Cod Chamber of Commerce helped organize the day’s proceedings.
