Sea Education Association to Host Lecture on Coast Guard Search and Rescue

WOODS HOLE – Sea Education Association (SEA) will host a public lecture, “Rescue at Sea! History and Procedures of Coast Guard Search and Rescue Operations”, on January 22 at 2 p.m.

Captain Chris Nolan, SEA Assistant Professor of Nautical Science, will deliver the lecture, the first of SEA’s Winter/Spring Lecture Series.

The lecture will be held at the James L. Madden Center Lecture Hall, on Woods Hole Road in Falmouth.

It is free and open to the public.

In the faculty lecture, Captain Nolan, a former commanding officer of a U.S. Coast Guard cutter, will use compelling videos and photographs to describe the history of the Coast Guard search and rescue mission.

He’ll also discuss the modern tools, techniques, and procedures that make dramatic rescues at sea a routine activity for the United States Coast Guard.

SEA is an internationally recognized leader in undergraduate ocean education.

For 45 years and with more than one million nautical miles sailed, SEA has educated students about the world’s oceans through its Boston University accredited study abroad program, SEA Semester.

In 2016, SEA was honored with the National Science Board’s Public Service Award for its role in promoting the public understanding of science and engineering.
