fire department patchMASHPEE – Emergency personnel called off the search for a possible missing swimmer this evening at State South Cape Beach in Mashpee.

The Mashpee Fire Department were notified at 5:30 p.m. that a chair an unoccupied chair at the beach was about to get taken by the tides and the woman seen swimming in the area could not be located.

A fire department boat crew along with the harbormaster performed a search of the area.

Mashpee Police assisted at the scene and the Coast Guard were notified but were not used in the search.

By 6:30 p.m. all the cars in the parking lot were accounted for and the search was called off, according to Lt. Rick Thayer of the Mashpee Fire Department.

Thayer believes the call was a “good intent” call and that the reporting party were not sure if the woman swimming in the area was the owner of the chair.

The search boats headed east along the beach and were in the area of the Popponesset Inn when the search was called off.
