HYANNIS – The search is on for the new fire chief for the Hyannis Fire District.

The deadline to apply was last month and members of the fire district board of commissioners have received a number of applications for the position.

The district hired a consulting firm to conduct a nationwide search for former chief Harold Brunelle’s replacement.

Brunelle retired in November after 44 years with the department.

“We want to find the best and the brightest and it doesn’t preclude anyone from applying from the Hyannis Fire Department, we actually encouraged it, there’s a lot of good personnel there that I think would be interested in the position,” said board member Demetrius Atsalis.

They hope to have a new fire chief named in time for the annual meeting which takes place in late spring or early summer.

Atsalis said they’re looking for someone with a number of traits, including someone with a great understanding of today’s fire techniques, has an education in fire science and is able to work with fellow firefighters.

“We’ve had a handful of chiefs in my lifetime and now when we have an opportunity to choose a new chief, you want to do it right, and you want to get it right the first time,” said Atsalis.
