HYANNIS – Among the late Senator Edward M. Kennedy’s prized possession were photos and other mementos that he kept in his senate office in Washington, DC.

The office has been preserved in its entirely, along with paintings that Kennedy made of Cape Cod scenery at the new Edward M. Kennedy Institute for the United States Senate, which opens Tuesday in Dorchester.

The dedication takes place tomorrow on the site next to the building that houses Senator Kennedy’s brother’s legacy, the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum on Columbia Point.

According to Dan Reilly, Director of Communications for the Institute, “The Edward M. Kennedy Institute for the United States Senate is dedicated to educating the public about the important role of the Senate in our government, encouraging participatory democracy, invigorating civil discourse, and inspiring the next generation of citizens and leaders to engage in the civic life of their communities.

“The Institute will be a dynamic center of learning and engagement that uses innovative technology to provide each visitor with an information-rich, personalized experience that will bring important historical and current debates to life.”

Occupying the center of the institute and serving as a kind of heart of the facility is a full-scale model of the Senate chambers in the US Capitol where visitors can learn about the nation’s legislative process by debating and voting on the issues of the day.
