Seven Homes to be Built by Habitat for Humanity

homebuildingHARWICH – Habitat for Humanity of Cape Cod will hold a volunteer kick-off event Tuesday to begin the process of building seven affordable homes for families in Harwich.

According to Habitat Executive Director Victoria Goldsmith, the building project will help bring the nonprofit to its 100th home milestone since 1988.

“We don’t know which one exactly will be the one-hundredth home, but we will have completed 93 homes by July of this year, and we’re still raising walls on 10 more homes,” Goldsmith said.

This year, the local Home Builders and Remodelers Association of Cape Cod has committed itself to a “5-day blitz-build” on one of the Harwich homes.

The pledge will bring volunteer professionals with skills in the trades to erect one of the homes in one week.

The professionals will not be the only ones on site, though; the recipients of the homes will put in 250 to 500 hours of sweat equity themselves.

Goldsmith said the generosity of the community, including “tens of thousands” of donors, has lead the organization to the point where so many homes can be built at once.

“It’s really a very beautiful reflection back on the community,” she said.

Habitat is still seeking volunteers for the upcoming project. The kick-off event will be held inside St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, 310 Route 137 in Harwich on Tuesday, June 16, starting at 6 p.m.
