Shelter From the Storm Concert to Benefit Duffy Health Center

HYANNIS – Students from Cape Cod Academy and other Cape schools will sing and dance tonight while raising money for the Duffy Health Center’s Medication Assisted Treatment program.

The 10th annual Shelter from the Storm concert begins at 7 p.m. at Cape Cod Community College’s Tilden Arts Center.

Concert organizer and Cape Cod Academy teacher Larry Brown said that the annual event encourages young people to help with and start conversations about the region’s issues.

“Most kids, if they do a bake sale or car wash, they come away with a couple of hundred dollars and they feel good for doing it but know it wasn’t a game-changing amount of money,” he said. “Last year’s concert benefited the Safe Harbor Shelter and we raised enough to rebuild ten living units there.”

Since the concert’s inception, students involved with it have raised over $100,000 in donations to nonprofits all over Cape Cod.

The decision to help the Duffy Health Center’s program centers around the involved teenagers’ desire to help other struggling young adults in their age group, Brown said.

According to the Center, teenage drug abuse can impact the brain’s ability to function in the short-term as well as prevent proper growth and development later in life.

Brown recalled the first year which benefited the NOAH Homeless Shelter. It raised enough money to feed the shelter’s clients for four months.

“That night as soon as the concert was finished, a man from NOAH came back stage, and told the students, ‘look, there will people alive next year because of what you’ve done,’ and that’s very powerful,” he said.

The Shelter from the Storm concert costs $10 for adults and $5 for students. Tickets are available at the door.

Attendees are asked to bring a pair of new white socks to the show. Officials with Duffy Health Center say their clients are often in need of clean, dry socks.
