BOURNE – The Barnstable County Sheriff’s Office is being lauded by the Obama Administration for their work in combating opioid addiction.
The White House released its annual Drug Policy Control Strategy last week, which credited the Sheriff’s office for pioneering use of the drug Vivitrol in helping inmates break their addictions.
Sheriff James Cummings said he’s proud of his staff in receiving the award and is glad the program is being duplicated across the country.
Fifty-nine percent of inmates treated are in recovery, according to statistics from the Sheriff’s office.
Barnstable County was the first county in the nation to institute the program in 2012.
The program is now widely used across the Commonwealth and four other states.
