Shuttle Program Eyed As Possible Solution for Chatham Congestion

parking lotCHATHAM – Town officials in Chatham are looking into ways to try to alleviate congestion on Main Street during the summer months, and a shuttle program to and from downtown and parking lots away from Main Street could be the solution.

A presentation was made to the Chatham Board of Selectmen last month on possible solutions to parking problems downtown, the ideas included the proposed shuttle program as well as improved signage directing motorists to parking options.

“We’ve been looking at a number of different elements that might help to ease some congestion, and the pilot program for a shuttle is one of them,” said Chatham DPW Director Jeff Colby. “It has the possibility to be the most significant  positive impact of the different things we’re looking at,” Colby added.

Colby added that the idea remains in the planning stage, and presentations still need to be made to selectmen before any decisions can be made.

Colby said if the shuttle plan gets the go-ahead from Selectmen, they would test it out on a trial basis. Initial estimates show the cost of the program somewhere between $50,000 and $100,000.
