MASHPEE – A new national retail store could be coming to South Cape Village.

Preliminary approval has been given to the owners of the plaza to demolish an existing building to make way for a 20,000 square-foot new HomeGoods store.

The project will be presented to Mashpee planning board at a public hearing on March 15 at Town Hall.

“This is going to breathe new life into South Cape Village and I really believe it’s going to help the other businesses as well because people will get a chance to discover them,” said Mashpee Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Mary Lou Palumbo.

Plans call for the demolition of Building B next to Roche Bros. and the reconfiguration of the parking lot.

There are two HomeGoods locations on the Cape in Hyannis and East Falmouth.

It has not been revealed when construction would begin if the plan is approved.

“I’ve been talking to some of the small business owners and they’re excited too because they feel the more people we can get in to Mashpee, it’s a win-win for everybody,” said Palumbo.

A new L.L. Bean store is expected to open in the fall where the current GAP store location is in Mashpee Commons.
