SANDWICH – Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital was recently awarded the Greenhealth Emerald Award by Practice Greenhealth, an organization dedicated to reducing the healthcare industry’s environmental footprint.
The distinction recognizes Spaulding for its mercury elimination, waste reduction, recycling efforts, source reduction programs and other accomplishments.
The health center established a “green team” in 2008 which has saved approximately 336 trees and 250,000 kilwatt hours of electricity, according to Practice Greenhealth.
Other efforts include the widespread adoption of LED lighting, office supply swaps, “meatless Mondays” in the cafeteria and seasonal composting of food scraps.
The 60-bed facility provides rehabilitation services to Cape and islands residents.
