FALMOUTH – State Fire Marshal Stephen D. Coan, Falmouth Fire Chief Mark D. Sullivan and Falmouth Police Chief Edward Dunne have announced the cause of both fires that occurred in the early morning hours of December 8 have been determined to be intentionally set.

The first fire occurred at 12:50 am and destroyed the building at 12 Spring Bars Road that housed a business called the Fabric Corner. The second fire happened across the street at the Dollar Tree store in a strip mall at 7 Davis Straits around 1:20 a.m.

Officials say that fire was deliberately set after someone broke through the glass front door but was controlled by three fire sprinkler heads, limiting the fire damage.

These fires are being jointly investigated by the Falmouth Fire and Police Departments and State Police assigned to the Office of the State Fire Marshal. The investigation now becomes a criminal one as police work to determine who started the fires and whether or not they are connected.
