WOODS HOLE – The Town of Falmouth and the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution are in line for a state grant that could lead to the eventual reconstruction of the WHOI Dock.

The Massachusetts Seaport Economic Council approved $500,000 to pay for a feasibility study looking in to replacing the Water Street dock. Officials believe the study will take a year to complete.

“The WHOI dock is nearing the end of its design life and needs to be replaced. This grant will enable us to develop a road map to redevelop our waterfront over the next seven to 10 years,” said Rob Munier, the Vice President of WHOI’s Marine Operations.

WHOI partnered with the town to submit the grant proposal to the Seaport Economic Council, which works to promote economic growth in the state’s maritime sector.

“WHOI’s long-term presence in our town helps ensure the marine-related economic activity will stay in Falmouth,” said town manager Julian Suso. “Falmouth will continue to be a center of excellence for ocean research and attractive to new marine industry jobs with a modern marine facility.

WHOI officials will look for public input on the proposed dock project and say they want to directly involve local residents and businesses in the process.

“We expect that the renewal of the dock and waterfront facilities will create a capability that will foster the next 50 years of innovation and seagoing oceanography,” Munier said.

The Iselin Dock is the home port to three of WHOI’s research vessels, the Atlantis, the Neil Armstrong, and the Tioga.
