State Law Blocks Police Use of Narcan

police carBARNSTABLE – Police departments on the Cape are expressing their frustration that they’re not equipped to administer the drug Narcan, which reverses the effects of an opioid overdose.

State regulations require police departments to be contracted with a medical director to oversee the program, but local departments are having difficulty finding a person or organization to take on that role.

Cape Cod Healthcare, the parent organization of Cape Cod Hospital and Falmouth Hospital, has declined to provide the medical director role in the Narcan program for the Cape’s police departments.

The Barnstable County Sheriff’s Department, though, is looking into providing the service.

Barnstable Police Deputy Chief Craig Tamash said,  it would be best for there to be a regional medical director so all towns on the Cape would have access to Narcan.
