PROVINCETOWN – Members of the Massachusetts School Building Authority Board have voted to move renovation and repair of Provincetown’s former high school into the schematic design phase.

The 63,000-square-foot, four-story building, which formerly served as the high school, is now used to house the approximately 110 students in kindergarten to eighth grade. It was built in 1931, with a gym addition in 1963 and a library addition in 1986.

According to the building authority, there are issues with the school building’s mechanical, electric, and plumbing systems, as well as windows, the roof and accessibility. A feasibility study for the work showed a total of about $7 million in renovations are needed on the building.

In the design phase, Provincetown and the authority will look at options for a potential limited renovation and repair project at the school.

The next step would be for the authority to work in collaboration with the school district to produce detailed designs for a potential school project.

“Thanks to our collaborative work with local officials, we are working to build a safe and modern educational facility that will provide students with a top-notch learning environment,” said State Treasurer Deborah Goldberg.

The proposed project would make repairs to major building systems including HVAC, boilers, emergency generator and the roof.

“Production and approval of the schematic design will help us to determine the final budget for the potential project,” said MSBA Executive Director Jack McCarthy.

The MSBA partners with Massachusetts communities to support the design and construction of educationally-appropriate, flexible, sustainable and cost-effective public school facilities.

Since its 2004 inception, the Authority has made over 1,600 site visits to more than 250 school districts as part of its due diligence process and has made over $11.5 billion in reimbursements for school construction projects.
