Summer of 2014 A Good One for Tourism on Cape Cod

beachHYANNIS – The Cape’s top tourism official says the Cape’s summer tourism season was strong this year.

With Labor Day being the unofficial end of summer, Cape Cod Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Wendy Northcross says June had a four and a half percent increase in occupancy and a six percent increase in room rates.

July and August were also healthy, though final numbers are not yet in for those months, Northcross says.

The summer was unusual weatherwise with fewer hot and humid days. Though there were some rainy days in early August, the summer was also relatively dry.

Northcross says rain typically can be good for retail businesses because it brings people off the beach and into the stores to shop. But despite the lack of rain this year, Northcross says she believes retail businesses like art galleries also had a strong summer.

The other unusual weather pattern was a lack of heat spells in the city. Typically hot sticky weather in the city brings people down to the coast for weekends.

“We actually depend on those hot sticky days in the city to drive people out to the sea coast,” she said.

Northcross said she is expecting a strong fall with tourists coming to a wide range of festivals on the Cape.
