Libertarian candidate Heather Mullins, a 23-year-old who lives in Bourne, threw her hat into the ring for the open state senate seat in the Plymouth and Barnstable district after watching the Justina Pelletier case play out in the press.

Justina, a teenager from Connecticut, was removed from her parents care after two Massachusetts hospitals disagreed on whether her symptoms indicated a physical medical condition or psychiatric issues.

Mullins, a single mother, says her candidacy is concerned with four issues that concern parents’ rights: “protect our children’s financial future; the right to raise our children; our children’s quality of education; and the right to protect our children.”

“I am running for office because I’ve come to believe that we all have to be the change we want to see in the world and I’d like to inspire my generation to get more involved in the issues,” she wrote on her website.

She also said she is concerned about the large state budget. On gun rights, she said she said she does not like the idea that local police chiefs can determine whether residents can hold gun licenses.
