EASTHAM – As parents on Cape Cod worry about the local opiate abuse epidemic, one local woman is offering advice on what parents can do to help keep their teens away from drugs and alcohol.

Brenda Conlan of Eastham has been an Alcohol and Other Drug Educator since 1994.

She has lectured to students, parents and faculty in schools throughout the world.

In addition to her work in classrooms, Conlan has given presentations at international conferences in Europe and China for independent schools abroad.

She has also provided schools with in-service workshops and assisted in developing curriculum and policies regarding substance use.

A 1989 graduate of UMASS Amherst, Conlan taught languages in Germany before she began her training in the field of drug prevention.

Conlan said her account of her own adolescence, which was derailed by early addiction to drugs, gives her credibility in her student seminars.

Listen below as Brenda Conlan, prevention specialist from Eastham, talks about different parenting styles.
