WEST BARNSTABLE – Jennifer Maclachlan of Centerville and her father Jack Driscoll of Sandwich want to bring more science events to the region, particularly on topics that interest children.

That may explain why their next “Science Cafe,” as they call public events they organize around scientific topics, is focused on ocean exploration.

The second annual STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) Journey event called Ocean Discovery: Great White Sharks to Deep Ocean Exploration is scheduled to take place on Saturday, March 28 from noon to 4 p.m. at Cape Cod Community College.

The presentations will be by the state’s great white shark expert Dr. Greg Skomal and oceanographer Dr. David Gallo, who will speak on the discovery of shipwrecks.

Driscoll explained the choice of speakers. “When we decided it was going to be ocean discovery, we said, well, the two most interesting people we can think of are Greg Skomal and Dave Gallo,” he said.

There will be a number of interactive activities for children, including a sonar-matching marine archeology activity presented by NOAA Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary, Lego WeDoBuild, Squishy Circuits, a duct tape boat and Roominate Doll House.

Driscoll said having activities for students is important. “If we can keep kids focused and interested in technology all the way up through high school and college, then what we’ll do is we’ll create people with really good technology [skills] and this is really what we need to stay ahead of the rest of the world,” he said.

There will also be presentation from science, technology and engineering professionals, including presentations by Cape Cod’s largest STEM employers about their STEM career paths for students in high school.

There will be several merit badge opportunities for Boy Scouts, including chemistry and oceanography in the morning prior to the event start.

The event is open to the public and is specifically for students Cape-wide in grades kindergarten to 12th grade, as well as to Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts on the Cape and Islands and Southeastern Massachusetts.
