‘Swatting’ Hoax Results in Eastham Police Response

Police OfficerEASTHAM – A hoax call led police to a home in Eastham Monday night, after a caller told police he had a hostage and had committed a violent act.

Eastham, Wellfleet, and Orleans police responded to the scene, but an investigation found that there was no incident going on at the home. Police say it is the latest incident of “swatting,” a term used for hoax emergency calls.

“Around the country, this has been going on for a little while here, and on the Cape. We’re hopeful that this will stop because this is a serious situation,” said Eastham Deputy Police Chief Kenneth Roderick. “There’s an officer safety issue involved right away. Every call has to be handled as if it was an actual call, a true call,” Roderick added.

Roderick said police do not believe the call originated from the house. The investigation is ongoing.
