BOURNE – A Falmouth man suing the state in a right-to-die case will address the Bourne Democratic Town Committee Thursday night.
Dr. Roger Kliger, a retired physician who has been diagnosed with stage 4 metastatic prostate cancer, will discuss his suit that seeks to allow physician assisted suicide in Massachusetts.
A death with dignity advocacy group, Compassion and Choices, argued before a judge in Boston last week that no law specifically prohibits doctors from providing medical aid in dying in the Bay State.
The organization successfully argued a similar suit before the Montana Supreme Court in 2009. Montana is one of 6 states, including Vermont, California, Colorado, Oregon, and Washington, that allow medically-assisted suicide. The District of Columbia has also passed so-called “death with dignity” legislation.
Massachusetts voters narrowly rejected a right-to-die ballot initiative in 2012, 51 percent to 49 percent.
Thursday’s meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Bourne Veterans Memorial Community Center in Buzzards Bay.
