HYANNIS – During a budget meeting between the Barnstable School Committee and Town Council the potential cost of constructing the new Cape Cod Regional Technical School was raised.
The $143 million facility was approved by the High School’s Building Committee last month, instead of refurbishing the current building.
The cost of the construction will be shared by the Massachusetts School Building Authority (MSBA) and the 12 towns of the Tech’s District.
Upon MSBA approval next month, the district will then move into the schematic design phase.
But according to Barnstable Finance Director Mark Milne, MSBA’s reimbursement rate is around 42 percent of the project’s costs, so the 12 towns in the Tech’s district could be responsible for contributing $80 million for the building.
“Our Barnstable enrollment is about 173 students or 28 percent of the population, so the cost of this project, we could bear about 28 percent of it,” said Milne.
Milne added that it would cost the town between $1.5 million to $2 million per year.
“We’ll have to figure out a way to pay for that if that does get approved,” said Milne.
A meeting to discuss how the project will be funded and how it will impact the participating towns in the Tech’s district is scheduled for February 6 at 3 p.m. at Cape Tech.
The MSBA will give its final approval on February 15.
