Truro Making Efforts to Increase Road Safety

TRURO – According to a recent Cape Cod Commission study, traffic has increased by three percent in the past decade.

However, in the stretch of Route 6 from Eastham to Provincetown, traffic is up 8.5%, prompting Truro to implement measures to make the roads safer for driver, pedestrians, and bicyclists alike.

Speed limits will be reduced on four secondary roads, more visible signage will be installed urging drivers to share the roads, and a $1.3 million project along Route 6 is also in the preliminary planning phases.

Town officials say that many people who stay in Truro tend to walk or ride bicycles rather than drive, and along with the improved safety measures, drivers need to exercise more patience, particularly the stretch of Route 6 in Truro that expands from two lanes to four.

“It’s a perfect storm for people that have been waiting in traffic for an extended period of time when they’re trying to get to their destination and then when they have that added lane, obviously they increase their speeds,” said Truro Police Lt. Craig Danziger.

The town is getting assistance from the state and federal governments, along with the Cape Cod Commission to make the improvements a reality.
