BOURNE – Some of the summer’s visitors to Cape Cod should not be hanging around for the winter but they get stuck here through no fault of their own.

It’s turtle stranding season.

National Marine Life Center Executive Director Kathy Zagzebski, says they are gearing up to help the animals, which are mostly smaller Kemp’s Ridleys.

“These are juvenile turtles who come into the bay in the summer. But as the temperature drops, these cold blooded animals need to swim south but the arm of the Cape is in the way.”

Zagzebski says if you come across any cold stunned turtles, mark its location on the beach and contact the Marine Life Center or Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary.
