HYANNIS – Over 7,000 people from 19 states will be gathering in Hyannis next month for the eighth annual 2015 U.S. Figure Skating National Theatre on Ice Competition.

The event runs from June 18 to 21 at the Hyannis Youth and Community Center and will consist of 75 teams made up of eight to 24 skaters.

Event organizers yesterday introduced local skaters from the Yarmouth Ice Club taking part in the event and details about the competition.

The Yarmouth Ice Club is hosting the event.

Yarmouth Ice Club President Donna Wunder says this isn’t your typical skating competition.

“It’s not about the individual skater, the one or two minute program that if they fall, that’s it they’re done, they’re out of it,” said Wunder. “This is a team event and they are complete theatrical productions that are just beyond belief.”

Around 3,000 participants between the ages of eight and 80 are taking part in the competition.

Lynne Poyant, Director of Community Services for the Town of Barnstable, says that they’re excited for the event.

“We’re looking forward to welcoming people from 19 states and maybe it will serve as a primer for getting us ready to welcome people throughout the summer months,” said Poyant.
