United Way Announces Grant Recipients

BARNSTABLE – The Cape and Islands United Way has announced the programs and partnerships which will receive grants for the coming year.

Thirty-three nonprofits will receive funding for 37 programs, including a special strategic partnership with Gosnold on Cape Cod to support substance abuse prevention efforts in Yarmouth.

The United Way announced the recipients Tuesday night during its annual Community Impact Celebration.

The organization will distribute $750,000 over the year in the areas of Health, Education, Financial Stability and Housing, $575,000 of which was distributed Tuesday. The awards were given based on the contribution to the overall community.

Cape and Islands United Way CEO Barbara Milligan says there are so many people doing great work in the region.

“We’re really focused on addressing this substance abuse issue, trying to keep families in their home so they don’t become homeless, making sure that people are not food insecure and just seeing if we can keep our families that are living here economically stable,” Milligan said.

Milligan said there is a lot of need on Cape Cod and there is a lot of organizations raising money.

“What we are really trying to do is just bring efforts together so that we can address things in a real big picture way,” Milligan said.

The United Way has undergone a significant shift over the last three years and have brought in human service experts and community leaders to study needs, identify strategies that work and prioritize where investment is most needed.

The strategic grant of $30,000 to Gosnold of Cape Cod will bring the model of the Falmouth Prevention Partnership to Yarmouth. The goal of the program, which is a collaboration with the Yarmouth Substance Abuse Committee, is to reduce alcohol, marijuana and drug use among youth in town by increasing positive factors and reducing risk factors.

The Community Impact Celebration also recognized several organizations and individuals for their work in the community.

The Family Pantry of Cape Cod received the Grant and Helene Wilson Award for Outstanding Nonprofit Organization. The Family Pantry provides food to almost 9,000 individuals across Cape Cod.

The Ronald Reed Award for Outstanding Nonprofit Volunteer Leadership was presented to Tom and Judy McCullough, long-time volunteer leaders at the Cape Cod Council of Churches and the Cape and Islands United Way.

Matthew West, a 19-year-old senior at Nauset Regional High School, also received the United Way Youth Leadership Award.
