Upper Cape Tech, Vineyard Schools Honored With Statewide Environmental Education Awards

State House - 2BOSTON – The Massachusetts Department of Energy and Environmental Affairs honored 27 schools statewide with Excellence in Energy and Environmental Education awards, and a number of local schools and students were recognized for their efforts.

Katharine Roberts and Rose Engler, 10th grade students at Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School, were recognized for building a cell phone powered by solar energy. Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School was also honored for its MVironment Club’s, which put together a program called “Engineering for Sustainability.”

Jonah Maidoff and Louis Hall, students at Martha’s Vineyard Public Charter School, received awards for their work in the school’s Social and Environmental Resiliency Program.

Upper Cape Tech in Bourne was honored for its Environmental Science and Technology Program.

Just off Cape, students in Middleborough were honored for a shed and garden project.

“These educators have gone beyond what is required to create programs that actively engage students in environmental and energy issues,” said Governor Charlie Baker. “It is vital we inspire young people to care about the well-being of the environment, and give them the tools necessary to help protect it.”

“I am proud to recognize Massachusetts students, teachers and nonprofits who are working to make a positive impact on their communities and our environment,” said EEA Secretary Matthew Beaton. “The programs honored today instill in our youth appreciation for our natural world and encourage them to create innovative solutions to our environmental challenges.”

Winning programs received $5,300 in awards from the Massachusetts Environmental Trust.
